Madam Clerk please call our first speaker. Harjit Singh. Harjit Singh. [00:04:11] Joshua Pun. Good evening school board members and Superintendent Reed. My name is Joshua Pun. I'm a high school student currently attending Centerville High School and I'm speaking on behalf of SmartSense. Thank you for the opportunity to speak today. I'm here today to advocate for the inclusion of financial literacy as a measurable component under goal three of the vision-wide comprehensive plan which focuses on academic growth and excellence currently the plan tracks performance through coursework state national assessments completion advanced courses and even progress and portrait of graduate skills [00:04:48] these are all meaningful indicators of student achievement but one critical area remains unmeasured I propose adding a measure such as demonstrated proficiency and essential financial literacy concepts by graduation assess the course performance or financial or standardized center financial literacy assessments financial literacy isn't just a subject it's a lifelong skill essential for success beyond high school. Yet despite Virginia's graduation requirement for personal finance, financial literacy outcomes are not being tracked or measured as part of student growth. By adding a measure that tracks student growth and performance in financial literacy coursework, Fairfax County can ensure that our graduates leave not only academically strong but also financially capable, ready to make informed decisions about college, career [00:05:28] and life. Thank you for considering this audition. I firmly believe that incorporating financial literacy into Goal 3 measures will help ensure that every Fairfax County student will be prepared to make informed, responsible, and confident financial financial decisions both now and beyond graduation thank you jerry well dear superintendent reid and members of school board my name is jerry i'm a parent with two [00:06:04] children attending fairfax county public school thank you for the opportunity to speak about the division-wide comprehensive plan my focus today is the continuing issue of mixed mixing advanced academic program aap students with non-aap students within the same school and there's impact on the quality of education. Specifically, I want to highlight an ongoing situation at the Haycock Elementary involving Ms. Williams fifth grade AAP class. Currently her class is being taught by a non-AAP teacher while the other two fifth grade AAP classes have dedicated AAP [00:06:40] math teachers. Parents raised concerns about this arrangement at the beginning of the semester but the principal's assurance regarding shared materials and class observations have not address the call issue. We have observed frequent instances of incorrect math concepts being taught, some identified by students themselves. When questioned, the teacher has been unresponsive or attributed these errors to county guidelines. This raises significant doubts about the teacher's understanding of advanced math concepts and her ability to provide the [00:07:16] pre-eligible foundation crucial for fifth grade AAP students. The current This situation is denying these students the excellent and equitable math education they deserve, potentially hindering their progress in higher-level math courses. I urge the board to take immediate action to ensure that all AAP students at Hacog Elementary receive instruction from qualified AAP certified teachers, providing a consistent and high-quality learning experience for every student. [00:07:47] Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I'm available to answer any questions, if you may have. Madam Chair, that was our last public speaker. [00:08:05] Thank you for sharing your comments with us. The school board will consider the plan at our October 23rd regular meeting. Thank you to those of you who joined us and have a nice evening. The public hearing of the VDOE comprehensive plan is adjourned as of 6:30, 7:00 PM. [00:08:42] Can we go ahead and lift the screen so we can set up for orchestra, please? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Coraggio Consulting ยท aguyonx.com
