AND AS I THINK WAS NOTED AT THE START OF OUR MEETING, WHILE THE SCHOOL YEAR ENDED AT THE END OF MAY, HCPS CONTINUED ACTIVELY IN BUSINESS WITH SUMMER ACADEMY REMEDIATION, LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES. SO WHILE SUMMER BREAK WASN'T AN ACTUAL break uh it was a break from the traditional school year and we're ready to gear up and welcome students back to school for the traditional school year on monday and dr grant and dr hughes are here to provide you a comprehensive of many of the things uh that we've been underway preparing for [00:29:23] and things that we want our staff and students and community to know about our back to school okay thank you dr cashwell good afternoon madam chair members of the board today dr hughes and i we'll provide an update on school readiness as we prepare to welcome students back to school on monday august 18th as we begin the new school year it is important to note that our work as a division is aligned to the new hcps strategic plan journey to 2030. this plan provides a vision for [00:29:59] the future of hcps built with a collective vision and a clear roadmap to ensure students are prepared for the future following this board's adoption of the new plan last spring our division and school leaders have immersed themselves in a new mission vision core values and focus areas over the summer as together we build and plan for a new school year we reaffirm our school culture and our [00:30:32] commitment to students every day by modeling the HCPS core values in everything we do, by keeping our students and their success front and center, nurturing belonging to everyone in our buildings, creating opportunities to collaborate and innovate, and by ensuring that every student has equitable access and opportunity and the resources they need to meet their individual needs. [00:31:03] The four goal areas for Journey to 2030 encompass all that we do as a division. The updates you received today clearly align to one of these four goals: academic achievement, learning environment, physical, social, emotional, and mental health, and recruit, engage, retain, and reward staff. [00:31:31] as shown on the slide this presentation will encompass the following topics on back to school readiness community engagement staffing facilities and operations safety and security cell phone reminders school nutrition and back to school reminders for our families and guardians this summer this summer provided powerful opportunities to deepen family and community engagement across the county. In partnership with Virginia Department of Health and Richmond Henrico Health Department, [00:32:09] HCPS hosted a series of immunization clinics to help students meet school attendance requirements. As of today, I know you see we thought we had 200, now we have over 500-400 students that have been immunized. With staff continuing outreach to support remaining families to ensure every student starts the year ready we've added three more on-site clinics during the first three days of school we've also been out in neighborhoods with our mobile resource center and showed up at over 50 [00:32:48] community events to connect with our families and if you missed it our back to school event brought out more than five five thousand attendees our biggest yet building on our last year's momentum henrico cares mental health services and supports for hcps students and families we continue to grow this year we with several key additions the opening of a free part-time mental health clinic [00:33:22] at the oak three licensed mental health professionals providing outpatient therapy and select in select elementary schools and the expansion of pet therapy we're excited about that students participating in summer programming at the oak were eligible to receive free mental health services and supports provided by select hcps school counselors as we enter the new school year this program is now expanding for additional students with services available by appointment [00:33:57] on tuesday and wednesday evenings from 4 to 8 p.m interested parents guardians should contact henrico area mental health at 804-727-8515 and request to initiate services at the oak location the number is located on hcps website beginning this year all hcps schools will have the opportunity to request regular or scheduled therapy dogs visit directly from pet partners [00:34:32] the presence of therapy dogs in schools has been associated with reduced stress increased feelings of connection and improvements in emotional regulation making them a valuable complement to numerous strategies and aligned actions outlined in the division's journey to 2030. school leaders will be provided with clear guidance to help integrate therapy dog visits into their ongoing efforts to promote positive school climate and student well-being i will now [00:35:06] turn the presentation over to dr leslie hughes chief of learning thank you while community engagement activities were taking place hr teams and supervisors across hcps were busy recruiting new employees to join the henrico family we are pleased to report that all classrooms are staffed with a caring and dedicated adult on the first day of school thanks to a strong team of new and returning bus drivers we can cover every route without the need for double backs resulting in timely arrivals for students and additionally a hundred percent of frontline cafeteria positions [00:35:41] are filled our hard-working school nutrition team is prepped and ready to deliver great service across every henrico school summer 2025 was a whirlwind of growth and connection across hcps by engaging staff through professional learning once again the elementary and secondary teaching and learning teams offered flexible learning experiences giving teachers the option to trade a day teachers could elect to participate in professional learning over the summer in exchange for time back on august 13th while teachers who participated in the required training over the [00:36:18] summer were not required to report to work on august 13th i hear that some took advantage of a day to return to their classrooms for uninterrupted planning and preparation time New this summer, the Division of Learning introduced the first ever new leader launch in collaboration with the Division of School Leadership. [00:36:36] We welcomed new principals and associate principals. This multi-experienced day provided new leaders with the foundational knowledge and support needed to navigate their first year in HCPS. The following week, school division and school division leaders came together for the third annual Empowering Leaders Symposium. [00:36:56] three-day conference event focused on collaborative learning and aligning leadership priorities to our new strategic plan Journey to 2030. Next, the exceptional education and professional learning and leadership teams welcome provisionally licensed teachers for a week of learning and introduce them to the iTeach program designed to support provisionally licensed teachers and staff on their path to full licensure. It continues that same momentum carried into a new teacher academy where approximately 420 new and new to henrico teachers gathered with school [00:37:31] and central office leaders to prepare for the upcoming school year this experience laid a strong foundation for instructional support and professional connections office professionals were invited to a full day retreat organized by the department of school leadership and then to To close out the summer, DOL and HR hosted an IA and AET, which stands for Alternative Education Technicians Conference for over 800 IAs and AETs. [00:38:02] Participants engaged in CHAMPS training, which is training centered around behavior, and they had learning designed specifically for their team assignments. What a summer! From flexible learning to leader development and from teacher onboarding to targeted support staff training hcp offered meaningful opportunities and professional growth at every level early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we are proud of the energy and engagement that defined the summer of 2025. also during the summer the facilities custodians and school-based teams have [00:38:36] been hard at work preparing buildings for the returning of staffs and students projects such as hvac repairs building maintenance deep cleaning and landscaping have all been a priority the The transportation team has been busy hiring and training bus drivers and finalizing roads. [00:38:54] Bus assignments are now available to all families in PowerSchool, and families can download the Edulog mobile app to track buses in real time. Technology Services is excited to announce the rollout of new high school laptops for this school year. [00:39:09] This fall, new Lenovo laptops will be issued to high school students, classroom teachers, and high school school-based staff. This year will also be year two for the student smart IDs. Wearing the HCPS student ID badge daily in a visible place is an essential safety layer and supports operational services such as riding the bus, attendance tracking, purchasing lunch and checking out library books. [00:39:38] Student smart IDs must also be used in accordance with procedures for attending sporting events. There is an extensive FAQ on the school division website. The most important thing for families to know is that students will receive their IDs at no cost to families at the beginning of the year and students are expected to wear their IDs in a visible place each day. [00:40:01] The safety and security of our students, staff and visitors continue to be a top priority across all HCPS schools and offices. This year marks the third year of implementing weapon screening at our secondary schools and the second year at our elementary schools. [00:40:17] We now have 157 school security officers serving our schools, including seven newly added position for secondary schools. At the beginning of each school year, central staff discuss strategies and share guidance documents to support school leaders in the implementation of revised cell phone policies and practices. [00:40:38] This year is no different, and we have provided training to our school leaders on changes to policy language and enforcement policies. As we previously announced, this year our students will see a minor increase in their meals. [00:40:54] $0.25 for breakfast, which is now $1.75, and $0.10 for lunch, which is now $3. We are pleased to maintain free meals for all students at 49 of our schools through the Community Eligibility Provision Program. The full list of CEP schools can be found on our website. [00:41:14] Families will receive school-specific information through ParentSquare and back-to-school events to explain the registration process for reduced meal prices. This is particularly important at middle schools where 6th graders may have previously attended a CEP school in elementary. [00:41:32] As we close the presentation, let's review a few final reminders for families. We are asking parents to download and use the parent square app for all school communication. It is the fastest and most reliable way to receive updates, announcements, and messages available in more than 100 languages. [00:41:51] Families are also encouraged to download the EDULOG bus tracking app to get real-time updates on bus locations, delays, and pickup and drop-off times. During the first week of school, students will receive their new smart ID cards, and we cannot stress enough how important these IDs are. [00:42:11] Parents should submit lunch application forms unless your child's school is identified as a CEP school. We appreciate support from parents in reinforcing the cell phone policy by reminding students to keep their phones stored and away throughout the day. [00:42:26] Finally, all required school and district forms should be completed online or in paper copy and should be returned to the school in paper copy, but we do encourage parents who are able to complete the forms as soon as possible by logging into PowerSchool. [00:42:41] These back-to-school reminders can help keep our schools safe, organized, and focus on learning from day one. whoops I went too far sorry Tiffany this concludes our presentation we're excited for what this school year holds and confident in what groundwork has been laid we appreciate your continued support as we move forward together focused and prepared and committed to every student success at this time Dr. Grant myself and members of DLT will be happy to answer any [00:43:13] questions thank you so much I'm going to start on my left with Mr. Young I'm first thank Thank you for the presentation. I'm going to try to be as brief as possible and there's a lot of information here, but I am excited about the students getting ready to go back to school. And I know a lot of teachers are at home, but DLT, you guys do the work in the off season to get us prepared to go back to school. And just some of the things that I heard that stood out to me was the 400 immunization opportunities. Are those offered free to everybody that comes in? Yes, they are for free. Okay, perfect. [00:43:50] Next thing, I want to give a shout out to Adrian's team, the family engagement team. I was fortunate enough to be there all day for the back to school event, and it was a lot of children there, a lot of students there, a lot of families came through. I think we ran out of book bags, meaning that people are showing up and they need these things, and we even had to wait for them to still get book bags even after we ran out. [00:44:13] But I know that's not easy to pull off when you're trying to get everybody out there. school was represented. The teachers showed up. I mean, DLT was there. Board members were there as well. We had a great time. So Adrian, kudos to your team and your staff. [00:44:28] Soulless care, Hazel health, mental health is still one of the most important things to me. And I'm so happy that we're still doing this and we expanded the Henrico Cares program this year even further. So I know we had an incident in one of the schools where the pets were able to come in and everybody enjoyed just having a little joy in their life. And I have a new pet as well that things aren't going good. [00:44:51] But yeah, may need pet partners, right? And then transportation. I had an opportunity to speak, and I know Lenny's not here. I had an opportunity to speak to them. And the one thing that I took away was they were so excited to be fully staffed. That came up every single time someone spoke was that they were excited about not having to do double runs or do double pickups or double back. [00:45:13] And they were excited, and they were thankful that this board and Dr. Cashwell and her staff, we took that pay up a little bit for them, right? And they were excited and they were thankful. But the biggest thing was that we're getting quality employees in our system now. [00:45:28] So I want to say thank you to that. And I don't think I have a whole lot of other things. New leader lunch, is that just for principals? Do you want to go? Principals and associate principals. Okay. All right. the i guess it was a conference for ias over 800 attended was that was that our first time doing that that was our first time and it was a huge success we uh committed to doing so before we confirmed how many employees we would be providing professional learning to and we were so excited um that we uh we had the events running at two different high schools and we heard nothing but [00:46:05] praise from the individuals who attended they were very excited felt valued and i think really received professional learning that can help hone their craft this school year? Yeah, I think the biggest thing you said was they felt valued. So I'm glad that we are giving everyone attention. [00:46:21] And I don't want to leave our cafeteria staff out there 100% filled as well. They're on the front line, so thank you for feeding our students. I think I am almost done the student ID badges. I don't personally think that that went extremely well last year. I know we tried, and we're going back and doing some self-correcting. [00:46:38] What's going to happen if they lose it? what's going to happen if they forget to bring it um and towards the end of the school year kind of seen a little bit of a drop off can we address that a little bit i'm happy to you know we did emphasize this year that as part of our student code of conduct it is an expectation that they're worn um and certainly why we want to continue to emphasize that in our schools and we're asking for our families to help support us in that we certainly understand an item like an id might be forgotten here or there and it will not disrupt a student's ability to participate in school but it is a key part of us being able to better track be more efficient with school safety [00:47:16] attendance the attendance pilots that happened last year were highly successful it saves a lot of staff time for students to be able to check in with that so as we begin to expand it it will be more and more important that students have those ids as they're coming and going each school day so whether it's clipped to the backpack worn on a lanyard it should be uh with each student every DAY. THANK YOU, DR. CASHWELL. AND IT'S NOT PUNISHABLE, CORRECT? CORRECT. FORGETTING AN ID WOULD NOT BE SOMETHING SUBJECT TO PUNISHMENT, BUT IT IS PART OF OUR DAILY EXPECTATIONS THAT STUDENTS PRIORITIZE BRINGING THOSE. AND MY LAST STATEMENT IS I THINK FOR [00:47:55] THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, ENRIQUE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAD ZERO GUNS ON THEIR CAMPUS, CORRECT? THAT IS TRUE. AWESOME, AWESOME. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. THANK YOU, MR. YOUNG. MS. ATKINS. THE PRESENTATION REFLECTS THAT THE WORK CONTINUES AND IT'S GOOD WORK. SO THANK YOU dlt all staff educators and those who don't have the titles and especially our parents who continue to trust us with their kids and it's it's going to be a wonderful 25 26 school year as well i did have a question around the laptops did i hear correctly that each student will receive [00:48:34] new laptops high school students only high school students i want to make that very very clear that it's high school students only. What do we do with the old laptops? I know they are on a replacement cycle but I would call on either Mr. Wack or of course Mr. Maddox doesn't have a mic handy but we're going to get him to one quickly so he can help us with that response. Yes happy to answer that question. So what we do with the the laptops from the previous lease is we take them and surplus sell them and then we take those funds and put them back into technology for the school division [00:49:12] for other projects i would love to see the numbers on that and and how we use the funding for the surplus i have a few ideas and so i'm grateful for that response and look forward to seeing the numbers on on what that looks like yes ma'am absolutely i'll get that to you all thank you um let's see what else do i have around the pet therapy is something that i know i advocated for a long time ago and it's so nice to see it utilized in a multitude of ways and uh i just i [00:49:46] can't wait to see more pictures and more testimonies are we memorializing these experiences for our wellness teams yes we are okay great and that is all that i have thank you thank you so much Mr. Irving. Thank you for the presentation. It's our busiest time of the year. I wanted to speak to the vaccinations of 400 students. I think at a time when vaccination is under attack nationwide, [00:50:22] especially by the people within the federal government, I think it's so important that people are getting vaccinated. Vaccines are quite possibly the greatest invention in the history of humanity alone in the last 50 years they've saved 150 million children's lives in the United States so I think us doing this for free and families continuing to get their kids vaccinated is incredibly important and I I think that we should commend people that that do that and and you know the district for providing them all the bus routes and cafeteria positions being filled is tremendous I was also with the transportation staff and they were very [00:50:59] excited about it and the only thing I really have to say to that is it turns out when you pay people a good wage they will work in the jobs it's funny how that works um so the bell-to-bell cell phone practices um could you guys lay out for me and i think everyone the logistics of how that is working within the secondary schools like what is the practice uh for teachers and students and parents and administrators and like how does that work saying that you know you're a staff member who sees a phone like logistically if you could walk us through it first of all all cell phones must be [00:51:37] stored in a way during this instructional time this year when they're in hallways in cafeterias they should be in their backpack pocket somewhere but out of sight um in our code of conduct it outlines the consequences for the first second from first offense all the way down to the fifth offense and i would note you know part of and i know we shared in the spring when we were bringing THE UPDATES TO THE STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT, DR. GRANT AND THE TEAM AND DR. NOEL REALLY SOUGHT FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS, FROM TEACHERS, FROM ADMINISTRATORS TO MAKE SURE THAT AS [00:52:15] WE WERE FINE-TUNING OUR PRACTICES, WE WERE INSTITUTING PRACTICES AND ROUTINES IN THE SCHOOL THAT WERE THE LEAST BURDENSOME AND I THINK TO YOUR POINT, NOT CUMBERSOME ON ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS. SO BY HAVING THE STORAGE CONTAINERS IN CLASSROOMS AND MAKING sure that we provided those and every school has what they need. It should be a quick and easy storage. There were a lot of ideas shared with our teachers about ways to do that, taking attendance as kids enter, that sort of thing. And we saw a lot of success last year. I think we're prepared to build on that and make sure that we're sharing best practices and yet continuing to support, right? So going into the new school year, it may not be perfect [00:52:55] in each and every classroom or school, but we'll certainly be there to support our administrators and teachers through the school year and understanding what the best scenarios are and practices for the least disruption. And we hope that our students will be ready and willing to comply. We had very minimal disruption last year. I think we should give big applause to our students for their ability to follow the procedures really well and very quickly. So I appreciate that answer, But I guess I'm looking for something more granular in terms of like, say, I am a staff member within a building who sees a student with a cell phone. [00:53:33] What is the process by which a staff member follows? And then in terms of how the student gets their phone back, what parent does, like that level of granularity, like the actual steps of what, you know, as a staff member I go to and I put in that there was a cell phone at what time in the building. [00:53:50] Because speaking from personal experience, hallways and cafeteria during lunch is going to be extremely challenging. And I think having a process by which kids know that if it is out during that time, they will be caught, even if it's not until the next day, helps with enforcement. [00:54:09] And so I'm looking for, can you explain like the granularity of the logistics of like what is actually? Yeah, it may vary slightly school building to school building, but much like discipline procedures in each school where a teacher or a staff member would witness someone breaking a rule, any rule in the student code of conduct, there would be a procedure to alert an administrator and make sure it's handled appropriately. [00:54:30] AND I KNOW THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THEY'VE ADDRESSED IN EACH BUILDING AS THEY'RE WELCOMING TEACHERS BACK, WHAT THE SPECIFIC SCHOOL LEVEL PROCEDURES ARE. I KNOW PRINCIPALS DID A LOT OF SHARING LAST YEAR ABOUT, YOU KNOW, HOW TO BEST HANDLE THAT SO THAT TEACHERS AREN'T TAKING TIME AWAY FROM INSTRUCTION TO DEAL WITH AN INFRACTION BUT ARE GETTING QUICK ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT. [00:54:49] BUT WE CAN PROVIDE YOU SOME BETTER, MORE GRANULAR EXAMPLES BY LOOKING AT WHAT OUR SCHOOLS HAVE IN PLACE. WE CAN ALSO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE GUIDANCE DOCUMENT THAT SCHOOLS RECEIVE TO ASSIST Thank you. Okay. I think it's a much needed change. You know, I think the kids will even grow to like it, even though right now they're probably upset that it's happening. But yeah, everything else is amazing. I'm looking forward to the start of a great school year, and I thank you all. [00:55:20] Thank you, Mr. Irving. Ms. Kinsella? Thank you. Great presentation. It's so exciting to be back. But before I talk about back to school, I want to hear a little bit more about summer learning. Because outside of just the professional development that's happened over the summer for our employees, can we talk about our student learning? Whether it was CTE, I know those programs. I believe I said from our business advisory update June's meeting that all the programming was full. [00:55:52] But if you could just give us some enrichment and any kind of update on student learning over the summer. Sure. I'm happy to give you a broad overview, and then I can certainly provide you with a more comprehensive outline if you would like. [00:56:07] But we ran our traditional summer academy programs for elementary, middle and high, of course. Our elementary lineups included elementary remediation and also elementary enrichment. We also had summer programs that we worked with through example the YMCA. We had programs for our English language learners and Of course our exceptional education students that happened all summer and extended school year. So you know the standard lineup if you will that we typically offer in elementary of course some of our programs such as our [00:56:44] EL programs and our exceptional education programs were very full, you know, very exciting and our programs and remediation programs also were full and we were able to serve students so we were very happy about that as far as middle school and high school were concerned again we ran I'm sort of our traditional summer program if you will we ran programs for remediation we ran programs for recovery for students that needed you know coursework the past SOL courses and then of course we ran all of our CTE courses which to your point were extremely full and versing at the seams in addition to our partnerships with um you know some of our colleges [00:57:21] and virtual virginia and drivers that i mean just a plethora there's so much but if you would like a more comprehensive overview i can certainly provide that i just feel like you know we haven't met since june publicly right so much happened over the summer that wasn't covered so thank you for just a brief overview yes no it was a great summer i think for students and employees alike well and I think um just the I need to highlight communication or communications team um going into this summer um just everything about all the different opportunities and especially you know [00:57:55] over the summer especially on social media um and using you know parent square and just all the ways that we're communicating information has has really been tremendous um and just to start with the strategic plan. I mean that was well well communicated. I feel like I've seen it even though it's brand new. I feel like I've seen it everywhere prior to today which is truly back to school time. So I appreciate because this is the strategic plan is you know that's what guides all [00:58:28] the work we do in the division. So thank you to the communications team for just letting us see in my opinion, as a parent and as a board member, I feel very informed about all the things Henrico Schools has been doing. I mean, just like covering all of the FACE events, not just the back to school event, but our FACE team, you know, you said over 50 events, I believe they and the team communications team was out covering and sharing back. And I think that's part of what engages our family and truly moves us forward and connects us and connects our families with the resources that are [00:59:06] available that we are so fortunate in Henrico we have so much but I continually hear oh I didn't know that oh I didn't know that so I really feel like the communications and the outreach has never been better so thank you very much to the team let me see next on my list was I support exactly what my colleagues have said about therapy animals I mean I have a cat not a dog but a big big animal lover and uh it's well known uh the benefits that animals bring folks um and just on slide eight if [00:59:44] we can just go to slide eight i'm just going to emphasize it again even though colleagues have said it staffing because this board and prior prior boards and superintendent i mean that's amazing right all classrooms are covered all bus routes no double backs i mean we've had schools over time that literally had scheduled late arrivals so this slide really is tremendous and our frontline cafeteria staff i mean i'm hearing i just have to highlight if we could jump to the [01:00:16] facility slide 10 slide facilities and operations normally at this time of year i'm hearing complaints i mean i hate to say it but it's saying hey miss kinsella you know as we start the new year please fix this please help us with this and let me just say our custodial services team really knocked it out I don't know how much overtime we paid over the summer but I know that custodial services is better staffed than we were as a result of slide number eight right like all [01:00:50] the staffing makes the difference just the HVAC I know the HVAC team started work on booting up our buildings so day one we wouldn't have issues right just kind of seeing what we're expecting And then Dr. Cashwell, since Mr. Pritchard isn't here, my understanding on if we've had some mechanical issues, because we have with some of our HVAC, it is more of an outside vendor issue or a parts issue. [01:01:23] And maybe Mrs. Moore is here. Yeah, I can speak at a high level too. Yes, certainly the team always acts very quickly when there's any disruption to whether it's HVAC or any other system that's critical in the building, but, you know, I know where oftentimes we might hear folks thinking, oh, it's taking exceptionally long, or they've moved to using temporary cooling units or something in a space. It must be that no one's addressing this. That is not the case. It's being addressed very quickly, and to the extent it can be serviced by our HVAC team, they're incredible, our mechanical team, they will get right to work and hopefully be able [01:02:03] to address it. Sometimes it may be that they need a part that they're waiting for, but oftentimes it may mean working with a vendor for something that's more specific to a unit, whether it's new or it's been there for a number of years, or something with the control systems. And so, you know, sometimes that can just take time. And that's the case across all sectors right now, whether it's a school system, a business building, or any sort of facility that's trying to operate. [01:02:30] We do know that there is a strain on that sector right now, and not just the parts and the mechanical pieces, but in the labor sector as well. And so at times we feel that. So we do everything we can to mitigate and make folks comfortable during any such time as a system would be down. [01:02:48] And whether it's a part of a building or moving folks or adding those spot coolers. So again, you shouted out and I'm going to take this moment and I think you were so kind and generous as you all have been to note the work that's happened through the summer and preparation for the school year, custodial teams and so on. [01:03:07] But our team working on our HVAC or mechanical units has just been incredible. And while they are down a few folks, they have just worked above and beyond to make sure that they're providing the very best service to our schools, understanding the critical service we provide to our students and staff, and we want to make sure our buildings are up to par. [01:03:29] And before we leave this topic, thank you for the update at a very high level, and that's exactly what I wanted. When I noticed how well staffed we are on slide eight for our classrooms, right, and nutrition and transportation. How are we staffed? Because I still think we have some work to do that I'd just like to highlight for our facilities teams because they have done tremendous, a lot of work with less. So if you could just please keep the board apprised on maybe what more we need [01:04:06] to do. I know that a lot of the facilities folks, actually a lot of the trades have aged out. So it is hard to get folks. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think a great step in the right direction as we ended the last year putting some compensation adjustments in for folks. And so what we're seeing already some forward momentum, and I imagine it will catch up much like it did in transportation and nutrition. But certainly to your point, with the skilled trades and just the labor market in general, with some folks with that specialized skill set, that's a little bit [01:04:41] more challenging for recruitment, but I know that our HR team and our team, you know, who oversees those folks are pretty creative in thinking about ways we can best attract individuals as we begin to see attrition there. If I might, just we have a plethora of CTE students. I don't know how they could support because that's an HR issue and instructional leadership issue, but I would just throw that out that I don't know how internships or mentorships I don't know what that looks like but it's a great way to hopefully give experience and [01:05:18] spark interest to students who are learning but also potentially welcome them to our team so I think there's a lot of room for growth there and I know the team's been actively looking to pursue some some of those options okay thank you and then I'd just like to shout out specifically it is I mean just our custodial services team. I have literally, Hermitage High School specifically, I heard a lot of hours over time and otherwise were worked. Just, I've been invited to come, you know, to come see [01:05:51] floors. And Chester E. Fritz Stadium has gotten magnificent renovations that I just couldn't be more happy about. I mean, carpet in my office, carpet in my office, I'm sorry, Hermitage is our office there at the school I mean just carpet in the library just the attention to the school has folks really excited and it's you know while it's not a renovation or a rebuild I mean you feel it when you walk in a building that attention has been given to it so just thank you for everyone who made that happen especially our custodial services team really and then I'm not done but [01:06:30] thank you for letting me truly shout out um facilities and uh some of our staff i just have to say you know relevant here we go to slide nine this slide summarizes the responsiveness to so much of the feedback we've heard for i hate to say years that we've been trying to respond to but relevant professional learning is what every single employee has said to us that they want so So I just wanna highlight this slide as well, that it is responsive and it's relevant. [01:07:05] It's not just professional learning, but it's relevant professional learning. And just let me say the virtual, I know last year we did an in-person convocation, and this year we had the virtual convocation, which was wonderful and it valued time, which every single teacher at this time of year says they need, which is time. [01:07:27] So thank you for, again, listening to voice, Employees should know that they are valued, appreciated, and heard. Let me see, what else? Honestly, I think that was it. [01:07:46] Sorry for going on and on, but I'm extremely excited about back to school. Thank you, Chair Shea. - Thank you, Ms. Gonzalez. There's a lot to be excited about. Again, happy new year. More to be excited about, yes, please. - I have one more. [01:08:02] I got so excited about just all the excitement about back to school. Cell phone, Mr. Irving asked quite a few questions on cell phones. Slide 12, just in, you know, when I read page nine of the Student Code of Conduct hard copy, when it talks about offenses and phones being confiscated and retrieved, how is our front office, in my mind, front office staff and support are critical in this endeavor, but as to operational, what does it look like, which Mr. Irving was asking about, [01:08:40] I have this specific question about cell phone retrieval. Who's managing that in the front office? I would imagine that's a front office. - Well, our administrators have worked to put some things together that again, not only honor teacher time, but other staff time, and particularly understanding the load that front office folks have, trying to greet members of the public and all the things. [01:09:02] And so I know they've tried to make sure that, each practice that's put in place at the school is cognizant of that and not leaning on staff. That's not to say there wouldn't be some interaction as parents would arrive to retrieve or that sort of thing, but we can get you some more granular detail. Each school's plan looks a little different, but that point, I believe you brought it up in the spring when we were talking about it, and it was one of the things we asked our administrators to be cognizant of as they were thinking of specific plans for their building. Thank you so much as we move forward with these, you know it's just tweaks really to the plans we already had in place but this particular piece [01:09:37] i appreciate the team um considering the feedback so thank you chair shea thank you so much okay team uh mostly a lot of days for me but a couple of questions um i'm really excited about that immunization number um i've tried to help uh amplify and share out what miss cox's team has put out about that because i think you're right it can so easily sneak up and so the fact that there were targeted emails to families that had that gap so that they could know instead of just a you know school-wide blast which i knew there were school-wide blasts too but you know also to say you know mrs shea we're missing your child's vaccination can you please make sure school [01:10:17] has record of it if not you know x y and z i think that was really really helpful i know um some slots filled up last week because there was so much interest um and you know so adding some additional was helpful i also um again want to shout out miss cox's team as a middle school parent in the first parent square newsletter that i got from my child's school the wording around the vaccinations was so clear and so helpful um i imagine it had to come through miss cox's office because it was it was so well crafted but it was very clear that this is a state [01:10:54] law um here's seventh and twelfth grade you know what is what we need or what a student needs in order to be compliant with it that by state law they can't start the first day until they have it um here's how to obtain it but then also like all the way the details of it's provided free by the state but we're also required if you have insurance to bill insurance so please bring that if you have it i mean it was succinct but also very clear and i think that's a game changer for our families trying to navigate this that not everyone's aware of so just a big shout out to [01:11:30] the middle school team and communications and student health for making all those pieces to come together to best serve our students particularly in parent square where um parents can translate it to their languages and that sort of thing you know clarity concise all super important and so i think they just nailed it out of the park on that so um excellent there um in terms of um hazel and care solace where is that information available for a student easily accessible for a student or a family who's looking for it so it is on the henrico county public [01:12:06] schools website um and then it is available in each school in the school counselor's office the school nurse's office um but i think the best place for families to go would be the you know hcps website um i noticed um on the slide there was some screenshot of almost what looked like one one cheaters one pagers is that what's available in the offices at school yes great excellence i think that's really helpful i had some godwin students um at the um hefe event they had a booth at the hefe event last and they um run no eagle left behind which [01:12:40] is a mental health service or kind of club that they've been running for many years and we were talking about care solace and that sort of thing and not all of them knew about it and that's so I just wanted to make sure you know especially students who are passionate about this and destigmatizing and connecting their fellow students with resources that it was easy to find somewhere especially with the back to school just deluge of all the information but a point person so thank you for making those available but digitally but also in the counseling office [01:13:14] I think that's super helpful um the professional learning at Tucker and the other sites that held it just tremendous much thanks to Mr. Raymond for um and all of his team custodial team um for sharing the space uh just this week or actually this morning someone's like Tucker's been packed for like weeks did they go back to school earlier than everyone else and I said no that's actually our staff and our teachers and they're there you know learning I love that IAs were included I think that will have such positive impacts on the outcomes we're seeing in the classroom with [01:13:53] students but also to Ms. Kinsella's point letting them know that we value them so much and we want to grow them as professionals as well and so thank you for hearing that and the in the many DIFFERENT BECAUSE I THINK REALLY ALMOST EVERY DAY TUCKER HAS BEEN PACKED FULL WEEKS. [01:14:12] AND SO INCREDIBLE JOB THERE. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE ADDITIONAL STREAMLINING WITH THE IDS. I THINK I KNOW ATTENDANCE HAS BEEN IT'S A BIG MANUAL LOAD TO MANUALLY LOG ALL THAT STUFF IN ADMINISTRATIVELY. AND SO ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO STREAMLINE THAT DEFINITELY WILL WIN. [01:14:34] but to mr young and dr cashwell's point the more it is utilized in the building for things like library lunch attendance you know all of these other things the more hopefully will come kind of ubiquitous that students are wearing it because they're using it right it's a it's an integrated part of their day um in terms of hvac that i think miss kinsella brought up dr cashwell um if parents have a concern for say like i heard my students classroom was not the optimal temperature that I would like it to be um where should they direct those concerns so that [01:15:10] action can be taken I know as board members we certainly care about every classroom but we are not in the pipeline of where those that action takes so where's the most efficient place for them first and foremost the school because the school uh administrative team is there to respond and submit work orders and work directly with our central team and so it may be that that's already happened and they'd be able to share that with the parent or it could be something that's that will be newly learned to the administrative team. [01:15:36] But I would always say start at the at the school level with the admin there. Thank you so much. And then last last item coming to the cell phones. I think we made great progress last year and then continuing with this year. [01:15:52] I want to encourage our families in the community that this to be successful really needs to be a team effort. WE CAN BE CONSISTENT ACROSS THINGS IN OUR SCHOOL BUILDING, BUT IF WE'RE REALLY LOOKING AT IMPACT ON CELL PHONE, NOT JUST ON INSTRUCTION, BUT ON OUR YOUTH AS A WHOLE, IT HAS TO BE A TEAM EFFORT. IT CAN'T JUST BE SOMETHING PARENTS ARE TRYING TO SOLVE OR JUST SOMETHING THAT SCHOOLS ARE TRYING TO SOLVE. IN ORDER TO HAVE REAL IMPACT, WE HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER. AND SO THAT INCLUDES, YOU KNOW, PERHAPS AN ADJUSTMENT ON WHEN AND HOW WE COMMUNICATE WITH OUR STUDENT. [01:16:29] i know in kind of my mom circles we've talked about um a lot of cell phones i'm i'm familiar with the apple side but i'm sure others have um when you schedule screen time limits for your child you can schedule the down time where they don't have access to be school hours right so um if that's something that's really important to you as a parent that your child is you know following ALL OF THESE GUIDELINES, AND THAT'S SOMETHING THAT, YOU KNOW, IS AN EXTRA LAYER THAT PARENTS COULD UTILIZE IF THEY WANTED TO. SO JUST THAT THIS IS A TEAM EFFORT, AND WE WANT TO DO [01:17:07] EVERYTHING WE CAN AS A SCHOOL TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AND STAFF IN THEIR LEARNING. BUT WE WOULD LOVE THE SUPPORT OF THE PARENTS AS WELL, SETTING EXPECTATIONS WITH THEIR STUDENTS ON WHAT'S EXPECTED OF THEM FROM THE PARENTS' SIDE. SO WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. THANK YOU. [01:17:25] and just i know y'all have been working tirelessly and your teams um especially teaching and learning dr hughes um but really all of our teams and i see miss bolden with hr getting everything fully staffed and and really the whole team over there and um the face team your incredible events not only um from back to school like mr young shouted out but y'all have been truly all over the division this summer um you have been in every single district which i want to really applaud you on i know that has been something an intentional effort over the past couple years to really look [01:18:04] at where the acute needs are in every district and make sure you're meeting them and um just tremendous job with all of those and and and really every and mr whack keeping the money keeps keeping us in the black but really the whole team thank you while many have enjoyed a vacation this summer i know you'll have it and you do that because of your passion for the students so that this monday we were ready for staff and next in this coming monday we're going to be ready for students 100 so thank you so much thank you all right board members that concludes items from me [01:18:43] THANK YOU SO MUCH. [01:19:11] thank you so for item 8.07 i just wanted clarification on the word consumables and if we can get an explanation of what that means in this context typically that would be a workbook or something that is being written in throughout the school year by a student and then it's therefore consumed or used it wouldn't be then used again so the here textbooks curriculum embedded materials consumables and or digital tools shall be provided free of charge for students in henrico county public schools i just want to be clear so uh the notebooks that are sometimes [01:19:49] offered those should be offered for free journals and so forth that's all included in this i just want to be clear this is specifically speaking to curricular materials so for example our english language arts curriculum benchmark has some hard copy printed text students may be using and then it also has a consumable book that they're writing in each and every day and all of that's provided and it's all free i just wanted to make sure we clarified that all of that should be free thank you miss atkins are you okay with taking action with that in the block or would you like to pull it out for action no we can keep it in a block great thank you so much any other items [01:20:27] colleagues all right so um the item 8.34 is the approval of consent agenda so colleagues so i have A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA? COLLEAGUES, DO YOU HAVE ANY? I DO. [01:26:35] board members i want to bring to our collective attention a matter that is weighing heavy on many in my district ravina sanston and highland springs as well as myself a proposed data center development off derbytown road it's in close proximity to baker elementary school the proposal is currently under review by the henrico planning commission and if advanced will go before the henrico board of supervisors for a vote it's important that i make sure that you are aware it is something that has heightened awareness in the community and specifically for me [01:27:10] I do have serious concerns and some of those are noise pollution and the slow erosion of environmental quality as well as diminished air purity and unsettling closeness to just the very neighborhoods that our students attend so while I really do acknowledge the economic growth and potential there i just simply cannot overlook the fact that our first responsibility is to the health safety and future of our students staff and school community and that no financial benefit can replace the wellness of our educators and our staff clean air in our children's lungs the quiet [01:27:48] need for learning and the peace of mind that families deserve when they send their children to school every single day and so for those reasons i want to formally share my opposition TO THAT DEVELOPMENT AND MAKE THAT WELL KNOWN THANK YOU CHAIR SHEA AND THANK YOU MS ATKINS FOR BRINGING THIS ISSUE TO OUR AWARENESS AND THEN JUST FOR CLARITY WHICH YOU ALSO REITERATED AND THIS WILL BE COMING TO THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS IT DOES NOT COME TO THE SCHOOL BOARD FOR A VOTE IT WILL GO TO THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS BUT SINCE IT'S IN YOUR DISTRICT I'M NEAR ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS THANK YOU FOR BRINGING IT TO OUR ATTENTION MY PLEASURE ANY OTHER ITEMS COLLEAGUES ALL [01:28:28] All right, hearing none, the next meeting will be our monthly meeting and work session, August 28th, right here in the New Bridge Learning Center.
